State Transit pays for all your training to become a Bus Operator including the upgrade in your driver’s licence from Class C to MR.   You are employed from day one of the training so you get paid whilst you learn the job.

The training is provided through a Traineeship Program leading to the award of Certificate III Transport & Distribution. The training takes place over 2 years, although the first 5 weeks of your employment involves intensive training -  3 days in a classroom learning State Transit policies and procedures, 1 day depot induction, up to 8 days driver training, 5 days in service training and 2 days personal safety training.

Throughout the next 2 years you will be scheduled to attend further off the job training in Customer Service, Working in a Culturally Diverse Environment, Financial Transactions, Workplace Communication, Working with Others, Occupational Health and Safety, Vehicle Inspection, Workplace Documentation and Reading Road Maps and Routes.

After the traineeship program, if you are required to drive 14.5 metre buses or articulated buses you will receive training to have your licence upgraded to a HR licence.   Once qualified at this level you are classified as a Senior Bus Operator.

After you complete your traineeship there are many other career roles within State Transit for you to consider.
