Environmental fact sheet

  • Between 2007 and 2012, as part of a $250 million investment, older buses are being replaced with new, environmentally friendly Euro 5 diesel and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses.
  • Catching public transport is an easy way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (see table below).
  • Sydney Buses operates one of the largest and cleanest bus fleets in Australia.
  • The redevelopment of the Leichhardt Bus Depot will see it become Australia’s first “all green” bus depot. More than 95 percent of buses will run on gas and the buses will be washed with recycled water.
  • Driving alone in a standard car generates more than 100 times the CO2 of a person using a bus.
  • Sydney Buses’ new Euro 5 buses are the first in the southern hemisphere and amongst the first Euro 5 diesel buses to be introduced into service worldwide.
  • The single bus lane on the Harbour Bridge carries more people to the city in the morning peak hour than all the other lanes combined.
  • During the past ten years new diesel bus engine technology combined with exhaust emission controls has produced a significant reduction in tailpipe emissions, with up to a 90% reduction in particle emissions.
  • Each bus can keep up to 50 cars off the road for each trip.
  • A program of fitting existing diesel buses with diesel oxidation catalysts will reduce gaseous air pollutants and particulate emissions for the remainder of their operational life.
